the hunger artist

Okay so I know the main point of this story was about the performer, but what was the underlying idea of it?? He fasts as a talent, but was this at all supposed to be religious? Fasting is supposed to be a very spiritual and religious thing. Or was it possibly plainly about a starving artist, trying to make it in the world just like every other artist out there? Perhaps it had something to do with the life of the actual artist of the story, the writer. Story wasn't very interesting but it makes you think.

  1. Yes, this summarizes some of the highlights, but try to us blogs more productively--what are some of the issues/themes the stories suggest? Review my comments on this story under "older posts"

  2. You're on to somethning, here, but if you leave it at a realization that our common bond is evil,. v. good, you risk falling into the same dualistic trap as YGB, with a similar pessimistic outlook--look at this from another perspective, to get the real "moral" of the story...but, yes, it does involve realizing the eivl (and good) in ourselves (the mixture)--rather than projecting it onto the other... in order to "save" (as the conventional religious binary might go..) the self

  3. The artist's life was somewhat depressing, it as if his hole purpose in life was dependent on his fans. Even when he was popular he felt unfulfilled because his manager would not let him fast for longer then 40 days.

  5. My blog post and other materials I've added should begin to provide answers to some of these questions and aid in deeper, more detailed exploration of some of the issues raised here...

BTW--not sure why my responses to YGB are appearing here...

  6. I felt the same way about the story. The title alone had me confused for a while but when I read the story it made perfect sense.I really didnt like the story because of someone using starvation as a tool for fame. I do know that people do fast as a part of a religion but this guy was just crazy. I really do not understand the moral of the story?
